Draft of Of Double Page Spread

Here is the draft for my double page spread, it is a biographical article on Cheryl Cole and it includes quotes and views from the fans I interviewed on Cheryl Cole.

3 WORDS: MESSY LITTLE CHERYL
Cheryl Cole, the name everyone knows, a member of Girls Aloud to solo star and judge on one of the most popular TV show, The X Factor. Now she can never get out of the tabloids but how did it all happen? From the age of nine Cheryl showed an interest in the arts. Born in Newcastle Upon Tyne. As a judge on The X Factor she has been known to favor contestants from Newcastle too, Joe McElderry? Remember him? The winner of The X Factor 2009. It doesn’t shock many people that he won, after all Cheryl made it obvious Geordie Joe was her favorite. Some could also say it’s not true but who knows? Not even Simon Cowell could tell us the answer, or could he? Lets start at the beginning. At the age of sixteen Cheryl beat over 9,000 people to win a place in The Royal Ballet School but then she realised singing was her thing. She endded up working as a waitress, not the best job ever, who would enjoy their life cleaning and giving out meals all day? She saw the commercial for ITV’s Popstars: The Rivals and what could she loose? She gave it a shot and all the judges loved her. After all the hard work she was crowned winner along with Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh and there it was, Girls Aloud. Once the girl band brought out their debut album Sound of the Underground, they worked on another and another, Girls Aloud was getting bigger and bigger throughout the UK. We’ve all heard about the horse and carriage wedding, Cheryl married footballer Ashley Cole in July 2006. It was all good until there were stories about the two of them in the tabloids non stop and rumours. Of course Cheryl wasn’t happy and the public began to wonder why she was dating him, or worse even married to him. What about Cheryl, how did she decide to leave the girls and end up on a pop, RnB solo career? It’s all down to Black Eyed Peas star Will.I.Am during the ITV2 Passions of Girls Aloud series, Cheryl auditioned as a street dancer to gain a part in the music video for Will.I.Am’s single Heartbreaker. She had to work non stop for the part but all her work paid off again. She won the part and was later asked to sing vocals on the track. Cheryl said herself ‘We became friends and he said he was interested in working with me again. It was a massive compliment but I didn’t even register it, really. I was working hard with the Girls. They were my complete focus.’ Said Cheryl.  Working with Will.I.Am was completely different to anything she’d done with Girls Aloud.
‘With Will I was seeing music being made right from the ground up.’
Cheryl said. After the song was released Cheryl decided to take some time to work more on a solo career, she released her first hit single Fight for This Love which ended up number one in the UK, later she worked with Will.I.Am again in a duet called 3 Words. ‘I still can’t quite believe that that song is mine,’ Cheryl says now. After the hit single 3 Words, she brought out a complete album named 3 Words, a mixture of RnB and pop songs. In May 2010, Cheryl filed for divorce at London's High Court, about time she got rid of him. Cheryl missed the auditioning process of the new series of The X Factor because of suspected acute malaria. Luckily she made a full recovery and returned to judge on the show. On November 1st 2010 Cheryl brought out her new album Messy Little Raindrops, she worked with Dizzy Rascal and Will.I.Am again in this album. They are just some of the artists she has worked with as she recently worked with Nicki Minaj and can you guess who? Will.I.Am which won’t shock many people. We can certainly expect a lot more from Cheryl in the future as she plans to stay as a judge on The X Factor and even the American version of the show along with Simon Cowell next year. Expect another album, singles and more because this is only the beginning for Cole. We had the time to chat to fans about Cheryl herself. Here’s what one of Cole’s fans said. ‘I really like the song Promise This by Cheryl, I can relate to the words and it’s just a really good song.’ Well Cheryl must be doing a good job on her new album to get a comment like that. ‘Cheryl Cole inspires me’ said another fan, It doesn’t stop for Cheryl, dancer, singer, judge, what next? Another fan we asked said they thought her fight back from going into hospital was inspirational because now she’s back on track. They also said that they liked Cheryl’s work with Will.I.Am. So what's next for Cheryl? Who knows, but she's sure to be on your T.Vs for a long time.

Article Research

For my double page spread I will be writing an article on Cheryl Cole. Here I have done some research on Cheryl Cole's life because I will be writing a biographical article on her with interviews with fans.

Born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Cheryl Cole grew up performing as a dancer in recitals and on TV. She also appeared in a few television commercials including one with her younger brother Garry. In addition to Garry, Cheryl has another two brothers, Andrew and Joseph and a sister, Gillian.
At the age of 16 Cheryl auditioned on Tyne Tees Television “Gimme 5” where she was looking for sponsors to get into the Royal Ballet School. Cheryl beat over 9,000 others to secure a place at the school.
Cheryl was working as a waitress when she decided to audition for ITV’s Popstars: The Rivals and at her first audition, Cheryl sang S Club 7’s Have You Ever. She got the thumbs up from all three Judges to go through to the next round of auditions to be held in London. On the 30th November in 2002, Cheryl was announced as a winner alongside Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh and Girls Aloud was born.
Girls Aloud hold the record for the shortest time between formation and reaching number one in the
UK Charts with their platinum-selling début single Sound of the Underground. Guinness World Records
lists them as “Most Successful Reality TV Group” in the 2007 edition, and the group also hold the record for “Most Consecutive Top Ten Entries in the UK by a Female Group” in the 2008 edition, with 15 consecutive top tens from Sound of the Underground in 2002 through to Walk This Way in 2007. Girls Aloud have since extended this record to 18 consecutive Top 10s from debut – the most recent being Can’t Speak French which reached number 9 in March 2008.
During the ITV2 Passions of Girls Aloud series, Cheryl auditioned as a street dancer to gain a part in the
music video for will.i.am’s single Heartbreaker. She won the part and was later asked to sing vocals on
the track. The song was released in the UK on 5 May 2008, but had already entered the top ten on download sales and peaked at number 4 in the UK Singles Chart.
Cheryl married footballer Ashley Cole in July 2006. It was reported that Ashley had slept with some hairdresser or something. Back in 2003, Cheryl was convicted of assaulting a cloakroom attendant.
Cheryl has been working pretty much non-stop for the last couple of years after winning another series of The X Factor - this time with Joe McElderry - She had a Number 1 single with Fight For This Love, have her own TV special on ITV1 and appeared at the Royal Albert Hall to sing alongside Snow Patrol.
In May 2010, Cole filed for divorce at London's High Court citing "unreasonable behaviour" of estranged husband Ashley as the reason for their break-up. In July 2010, Cole was admitted to hospital with suspected acute malaria. This was shortly after a visit to Tanzania, where it is believed she may have contracted the disease. Cheryl was forced to pull out of the X Factor auditioning process, but will return for the live shows.

It took the instant approval of the hottest pop producer in the world right now, Black Eyed Peas hitmaker Will.I.Am, to get the Cheryl Cole solo locomotion steaming. ‘This is how it all began,’ says Cheryl, in classic fairytale mode, of her solo journey. ‘Last year we made The Passions of Girls Aloud. I decided I wanted to have a go at street-dance.  The reward at the end of the show was a guest appearance in a Will.I.Am video, for his single Heartbreaker. We became friends and he said he was interested in working with me again. It was a massive compliment but I didn’t even register it, really. I was working hard with the Girls. They were my complete focus.’

But after the Out of Control Tour came X Factor and then Record company folk began asking if she was interested in Will.I.Am’s offer and so she decided to take some time out to work with him in the studio. ‘The way we work with Girls Aloud is that we’ll go into the vocal booth and do our lines on a track that’s already almost completed. With Will I was seeing music being made right from the ground up. He’d ask my opinion on the beats and the words. He’d send me off to write hooks.’

The recording process gathered momentum after Will and Cheryl had alighted on the gob-stopping robo-pop R&B duet 3 Words that will form the centrepiece of Cheryl Cole, solo. ‘I still can’t quite believe that that song is mine,’ says Cheryl now, justifiably chuffed with the results; a lean sound that straddles an imaginary dancefloor somewhere between Ibiza and South Beach, Miami and welds it to a lyric that sounds as if it were crafted from the finer end of a Geordie text message.'

She says, ‘Right from the start with this I knew what I wouldn’t sing. If I heard a thumping dance beat or a phrase I wouldn’t use, it’d go. If I was going to make a solo record it had to be a record that I’d play in the house. I love what the Girls do. I love the quirkiness and I love that it is our sound. But this time it had to be personal.’

Questionnaire Results: Audio

Here I asked some of the people who answered my Questionnaire
again and recorded them using a voice recorder.

Analysis of Questionnaire Results

Do you read music magazines?

Yes - 20 No - 0

This will tell me what to include in my music magazine
7 people out of the 20 asked liked posters, this was more
than the other choices. This information tells me that I should
include posters in my magazine because that is what most people
liked.

The results show that most people (6/20) didn't
like avertising in music magazines, in my magazine I
cannot remove adverts because they are needed in the magazine.
5 out of the 20 asked said they dislikes the free gifts
so possible I might not have a free gift in my magazine
because a quarter of the people I asked didn't like this.

On a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is very important and 5 is irrelevant, how do you rate the following. Please circle your answer.

8 people said that the charts were very important
this means i will use information about the lastest
music and whats in the charts at the moment.

8 people said free gifts were very important, this is
almost half of the peopel asked but 4 people disagreed
and said that they were not important, it is
likely my magazine will include a free gift because
most of teh people said it was important.

12 people, which is more than half asked said
that posters were very important, this means they
must be included in my magazine.

Nearly all the people out of the 20 I asked said
pictures were very important, 16 people said this
so this tells me to include lots of pictures
in my magazine.

7 people said that comepitons were not
important so my magazine won't have as many competitions
because the readers don't find them important in a music
magazine.

Out of the 20 people I asked, 17 of them
read music magazines monthly. This tells me
that the music magazine I create should be out
every month. Since no one said the read music magazines
daily my magazine will not be puplished daily.

The most popular words were, Happy, Pop, Music and upbeat
this may give me an idea of words to use for the title of
the magazine or words to use in the article or
on the front page.

Because 7 people chose £2.50 and £3.00
on what they would pay for a magazine it means my magazine
will cost no less than £2.50 and no more than £3.00
because most people said that is how much they would pay, if I charged more
they wouldn't buy it.

The common artists people said were their favorite
was Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and
Cheryl Cole. This tells me what artists information or articles
I should use in my magazine becase people want to read about their
favorite artists.

Most people bought music CDs so in my magazine
I will include CD information for example the CD charts
and it could also give me an idea of what to give away in competitions.

The most popular color people said was their favorite
was blue, this means I will use the color blue on my magazine.
Also the color purple, pink and red were popular
so they could be used on my magazine.

Questionnaire

Questionnaire
This is a questionnaire about music magazines. It would be great if you could take some time to fill in this questionnaire about pop music.

1. Do you read music magazines?
Yes No

I asked this question because I wanted to find out if people read music magazines if they didn't read them then I would be able to see what magazine they would read if they bought music magazines.

2. How often do you read music magazines?
Daily
Weekly
Monthly

I asked this question because it is likely the most common answer will be the frequency of publication I use in my magazine.

3. How much would you pay for a music magazine?
£2.00
£2.50
£3.00
£3.50
Over £3.50

I asked this so I could find out the price that people would be willing to pay for a magazine. This will give me an idea of the price I will charge for my magazine.

4. Who is your favorite pop artist or band?

I asked this question because the answers will tell me what pop artist or band I should include in my magazine.

5. On a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is very important and 5 is irrelevant, how do you rate the following. Please circle your answer.
Pictures 1 2 3 4 5
Competitions 1 2 3 4 5
Posters 1 2 3 4 5
Free gifts 1 2 3 4 5
Quizzes 1 2 3 4 5

I asked the above questions to see what people thought were important in a magazine. I will use the most important ones in my magazine because they are most important.

I have asked this question because it will give me ideas of colors to use in the color scheme of the magazine, it is likely I will use the most common colors for my magazine.7. What is the first thing you look at in a magazine?

I asked this because it will give me an idea of what I should put on my magazine front cover, because the first thing the reader will look at is the magazine front page I'll put the thing they look at first there.

8. What do you like about music magazines?

I have asked this question to see what people like about magazines, it will give me ideas on what to put in my magazine.

9. What do you dislike about music magazines?

I have asked this because it will tell me what not to put in my magazine, if it is possible for me not to include it then it will make my magazine better.

10 How do you buy music?
Download
CDs
Make it yourself

I asked this question because it will tell me wether to include a CD as a free gift or if I should include download charts or CD charts.

11. What three words do you associate with pop music?
1
2
3

I have asked this question because it will give me ideas for the name of my magazine, common words related to pop will be used for the magazine.

Thank you for taking some of your time to fill out this questionnaire.

Codes and conventions of a magazine double page spread

There are many different rules that double page spreads follow and these are the codes and conventions. Every magazine has a simple color scheme which means the colors are kept to a minimum.

There is one large image that takes up a whole page and sometimes bleeds between pages which is when part of the image is on the other side of the page which links the two pages together. Sometimes the picture is across the whole double page spread with all text on the picture.

Quotes are sometimes used in the headline, on the picture or in the standfirst or to break up the text. The standfirst introduces the article and is pasitioned under the headline. It is sometimes across the width of the page and often includes the jornalists name. All double page spreads have a drop capital at the start of the article. This shows the reader where to start reading. It is also common for the first paragraph to be in bold, stightly bigger type size, capitals for the first few words.

The headline sometimes uses stylised font. It doesnt tell the reader anything about the article, it doesnt relate to it at all. This is used to draw the reader in without them reading the article. The standfirst tells the reader what the article is about. Headlines are usually songtitles or puns. The byline is were the persons name who wrote the article is written and photograph credit.

A double page spread is layed out in columns, usually 2 to 4. There is a strapline on the top which tells you the subject matter. Articles are written informally and the personality of the journalist comes through.

Example of a double page spread.
The image covers both pages and the text is written over the image.
Simple color scheme is used to create a modern look.
Drop capital to show the reader where to being reading.

Uniqe font for the headline.
Little color used.
Written in 3 columns.
Serif font - makes it easier to read.

Intial plans for my magazine

Price: £2.90
Frequency of publication: monthly
Issue size: 156
Regular conent: monthly quizz page, competitions every month, free gift or special offer every month, readers comment/stories page
Feature articles: exclusive interviews, exclusive posters

Using the results from the research I found I have made the following descisions for my music magazine. I decided the magazine i am going to create will be a pop music magazine and the target audience is teenagers from ages 13 to 18 this is because i found that the common age of people who bought pop magazines were young teenagers. I also found that people of the age 13 and above listen to pop music more than any other age group to I chose this as my target audience.

The price of my magazine will be £2.90 because that is an average price from the magazines that I researched. The magazine will be published monthly because all of the magazines I researched were published monthly.

The issue size will be roughly 156 every issue because I found from my research that was a common number of pages in magazine.

The regular content will be a monthly quizz page because I found from my research that most magazines have quizzes and especially pop music magazines. My magazine will contain competitions every month because this makes readers want to buy the magazine. It will have a free gift or special offer every month to draw readers in. This will be a major selling point of my magazine because it attracts the target audience. There will be a page where readers comments of the magazine will be layed out and contact information were they can send their comments in. Similary there will be a story page were readers also send in their own stories.

The feature articles will be exclusive interviews with pop stars because using exclusive and having exclusive interviews with stars makes people want to read it because there will be an article about their favorite star. There will be exclusive posters which will only appear in that magazine of various stars to attract the target audience.
